Mailchimp
The more reliable method would be to use a system such as that provided by Mailchimp. They provide a drag and drop, style-able designing tool to create the emailers. They also provide a complete system for managing your mailing lists, unsubscribes and tracking of who has received/opened/clicked on links in your email.
The emails built in Mailchimp are also responsive in design, i.e. the flow of the design will change depending on the device or screen size it is viewed on (much like a modern website). This avoids the need to pinch and zoom to be able to read the text.
In some cases however it is a requirement to send emails out from Microsoft Outlook
HTML Emailers
These emailers need to be hand built in HTML and need to follow a strict set of rules/guidelines in order for them to display correctly in the users email software.
HTML has come a long way since it was first introduced. Websites can take advantage of all sorts of improved functionality which has been introduced over the years. However, an HTML emailer cannot use modern HTML features as these will be blocked or be incompatible with email software such as Outlook or Gmail.
The HTML used in an emailer needs to be basic and as far as possible, fool proof to avoid any rendering issues.
